Te Waka Unua School

PROPERTY DEVELOPMENTS

Te Waka Unua School is lucky to be redeveloping the entire school site and rebuilding the majority of our classroom spaces.  Check in here regularly for updates on the building project.

 NEW PLAYGROUND

Our new playground should be open next week once the soft fall matting has set. Unfortunately there was a costly setback to this project last week when the matting was vandalised before it had cured and had to be re-poured.

LANDSCAPING PLAN

We have just received the Landscaping Plan. Stage 1, the area in front of the Pīwakawaka classrooms will hopefully be completed before school restarts in 2017.

STAGE 2 CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

The Hon. Minister Hekia Parata visited Te Waka Unua on October 20th to officially turn the first sod to mark the start of Stage 2 of our build - a new 8-class learning space and  multi-purpose hall.

STAGE 1 - The extension and redevelopment of the Weka teaching block is now open. The building was blessed on Monday, October 10th by Justin Tipa (Ngāi Tahu) and is now being enjoyed by our tamariki and their kaiako.

Blessing the new building. This extension adds the equivalent of 3 teaching spaces and reconfigures the existing space to include a toilet block that is accessible from within the building and from the exterior off the new decking area to the west.

STAGE 2 - New Sports Hall, Senior Teaching Block and Administration Block Extension

During the school holidays asbestos was removed in the Kereru & LRC teaching blocks, and demolition began.  The removal was completed by a qualified and registered asbestos removalist in accordance with the Asbestos regulations and did not pose any risk to any person.   This signals the start of the second stage of development which we are expecting will be completed by the end of 2017.
